Attempts are made to keep the inmates engaged in different activities throughout the day. When a child with mental retardation enters into Bodhi Peet, the assessment of his/her physical and mental capacities are done. On the basis of which the immediate goal for the particular child is set up. All the inmates are involved in their Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and some other special activities whole day. Beside these, many of them take active part in several activities and programme organized by different welfare organizations and other bodies throughout the year. Except ADL; their other general activities include:
Special Educational Classes
these are designed especially for the mentally retarded children who are identified as ‘educable’ after assessment of their mental faculties. These classes are taken by special educators and psychologists five days in a week. Specially designed educational kits and toys are used here for the eye-hand co-ordination, color recognition, knowledge of alphabets, fine-motor movements, number learning etc. for the basic education. Though it is needless to state that the rate of their progress is very slow and poor compared with the average children of their age.
Music Classes
the inmates who have interest in music and eager to learn are trained by music teacher twice a week. Rabindra Sangeet, modern Bengali songs etc. are taught in the classes.
Handy-Craft Classes
these are also arranged for those who are interested as well as have talent in it. A trained teacher takes the classes twice a week. Fabric work, doll-making, stocking, flower-making, embroidery work, jute work etc. are done in the classes. They also draw and make greetings cards in the classes. All the inmates do the classes very eagerly and enjoy a lot.
Physical Exercise Classes
both male and female physical instructors do take these classes separately for male and female inmates. Efforts are given by the instructors so that all the inmates may be physically fit and well.
